Elbows
Forelimb lameness in dogs is commonly a result of elbow dysplasia, a set of diseases which includes osteochondrosis (OCD), fragmented coronoid process (FCP) and united anconeal process (UAP). Each disease can lead to elbow orthosis if untreated.
Hip surgery
This versatile joint has the biggest range of movement of any joint in the body. Osteoarthritis therefore can be difficult to adjust to – for dogs as well as humans! We manage pain with anti-inflammatories. However, surgical intervention may become necessary over time.
Knee surgery
Unlike in humans, a consequence of our standing upright, the knee joint of canines undergoes a considerable level of stress. This is caused by the top of the dog’s tibia (tibial plateau) being sloped and weight bearing, which creates a force that pushes the femur down the slope of the tibia.
The cranial cruciate ligament prevents this motion. Rupturing of this ligament will lead to pain, inflammation and swelling resulting from the bearing down of the animal’s weight. This puts the ‘shock absorbers’ (menisci) of the knee at risk of injury.
